SRIL – Supporting Rural Independent Living

  • Supporting Rural Independent Living (SRIL) is an innovative project, managed by TTVS,  that helps older people living in some of the most rurally isolated areas in Torridge.

The project recruits and trains local volunteers to provide practical support for older people living in rural areas. The project aim is to help older people to stay in their own homes for longer, reduce hospital admissions and overcome loneliness and isolation

The aim is to increase the number of volunteers supporting older people in the communities of Winkleigh, Halwill and Woolsery and their surrounding areas. By training and supporting these volunteers the project works with service providers, communities and individuals to identify those in need and provide practical support where necessary.

Volunteers are recruited from the local communities of Winkleigh, Halwill and Woolsery and the surrounding areas.

A comprehensive and practical training course has been developed in partnership with service providers to equip volunteers to support older people in the community, many of which are living with dementia, or suffering from loneliness and depression.

The project has established 3 new rural hubs within Woolsery, Halwill and Winkleigh to act as a focal point for community action, recruiting and training volunteers as well as providing practical help and support for older people.

Volunteers are recruited and trained to provide practical support in the home and assist older people to take an active part in community life by developing new activities and social clubs.
