SRIL – Supporting Rural Independent Living

  • The aim of the Supporting Rural Independent Living Project is to help older people to stay in their own homes for longer, reduce hospital admissions as well overcome loneliness and isolation.

The project has established 3 new rural hubs within Woolsery, Halwill,Winkleigh and Holsworthy to act as a focal point for community action, recruiting and training volunteers as well as providing practical help and support for older people. Volunteers have been recruited and trained to provide practical support in the home and assist older people to take an active part in community life by developing new activities and social clubs.

We have developed a new training program for volunteers providing the right balance of knowledge and information enabling volunteers to support older people living in isolated rural communities. The program will prepare Volunteers for their support role, challenge views and beliefs inform and raise awareness of key issues and enable then to have a better understanding of the role and purpose of existing health and social care services.

The creation of a bank of well trained and supported volunteers in isolated rural communities will demonstrate that issues affecting older people can be addressed at minimal cost, improve health and wellbeing and provide a model for wider community action.

The project will particularly focus on the needs of older people living with depression, dementia and isolation.
