Carewise Activity Day at Skern Lodge

Carewise Skern Lodge

The Young Carers Engagement Project, Carewise, is funded by Children in Need and offering small group activities to vulnerable young carers (aged 5-18) is part of the package. Unfortunately, due to Covid19, no activities could be offered over the past year, so Skern Lodge was the first in 2021!

Some of the young carers were understandably anxious but they received support and encouragement from their sessional worker to allay their fears. Also, parents were provided with detailed procedures/guidance related to minimising the risk of Covid infection. Skern Lodge Staff were also well prepared in relation to safety procedures.

So, the day itself!  We were really lucky with the weather: the sun shone! Kayaking was the morning activity-putting on the wetsuits was the biggest challenge! The afternoon was spent with the young carers having to work as a team on an assault course and then mastering the climbing wall.

Whilst the activities were enjoyable in themselves the most important outcomes were the young carers being able to momentarily forget their caring role, being able to laugh, relax and form new friendships. This couldnt have been possible without the support of Carewise staff and volunteers, and also the amazing staff at Skern Lodge. Thank you guys.

Young carer’s comments:

‘I absolutely loved today. I was really nervous and I covered a lot of fears.’

‘Very fun and exciting.’

Future activities planned: Kids Adventure Forestry Day; Visit to Exmoor Zoo and a Fun Beach Day.
